Honor Among ‘Phobes

Gaybaiting Linda Chavez, formerly of Maryland, bailed from her bid to be Labor Secretary under president-to-be George W. Bush Jan. 9. Word has it that Republican support for Chavez–who earned her homophobe stripes back in 1986, when she smeared Barbara Mikulski (using stump-speech lavender paint, if you catch my drift) during her unsuccessful campaign to take Mikulski’s Senate seat–had evaporated. The reason: Chavez admitted that she wove a web of deception to keep Bush from learning about her Guatemalan “houseguest”. Sounds like a double standard to me: Dubya wasn’t straightforward with the voters about his, um, experiences with a dangerous, addictive substance. Shouldn’t he, like Chavez, do the honorable thing and give up his appointed position?
