Come Through, New York!

Posted by NR Davis on February 27, 2004

Here I go again on marriage, but a long time ago I said that this would become the line in the sand for the 2004 political year, and man, was I right. Don’t know how glad I am about it, but if the controversy moves us closer to equality for all, I am SO in. And as I’ve always said, this is about equality, folks, and there is NOTHING more important than equality.

To that end, a wee bit of good news from the Empire State: Clareified points to a NY Daily News story reporting that the Green Party mayor of the village of New Paltz, NY, will start performing same-sex marriages today. Says Hizzoner, “We as a society have no right to discriminate in marriage any more than we have the right to discriminate when someone votes or when someone wants to hold office. … The people who would forbid gays from marrying in this country are those who would have made Rosa Parks sit in the back of the bus.” Rock on, Jason West!

  1. See…what I don’t understand is why the gay community would want to keep alive a predominantly hetrosexual institution that’s outmoded, over-commercialised to the point of tackiness and seemingly unsuccesful, when they have the chance to teach a much-needed lesson and put into place something fresh, meaningful and unique?

There has been some form of marriage from the dawn of time. Every civilization has had the equivalent of ‘marriage.’ I don’t necesarily understand the draw of it myself, but..

Anyways, it’s amazing how this has developed. Sure, homophobic rhetoric from the right was to be expected, Bush’s constitutional amendment was the obvious ploy, but then San Fran’s mayor, and now in New Paltz!

A pity neither ’serious’ democratic candidate is willing to take a strong stand, but that’s also to be expected. If more mayors / officials across the nation take a stand like this.. Who knows?

    It’s a classic.
