Folk-music legend and humanitarian Pete Seeger turns 90 on May 3, and he’s been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. Sounds like a perfect time for a worldwide celebration.

We do this periodically… today, we feature MICHAEL GAITHER, host of Songs and Stories and a fine singer-songwriter whose new LP Dogspeed is a must-hear. Get it for Earth Day — it comes in an eco-friendly package.
Listen and enjoy!

Whatever happens in the presidential contest, we know some good news is coming… Bush is outta here! And that’s not all: Folk fans in the area surrounding Washington, DC, will get an opportunity to come together and celebrate with music and joy.
Labor and protest music is the specialty of folk performer George Mann, who performs solo and with 91-year-old folk dynamo Julius Margolin. George is also the producer of the acclaimed Hail to the Thief! anti-Bush administration CD series. The fourth and final release of that series is out (it’s awesome!), and it features 21 tracks by artists including Anne Feeney, Tom Paxton, the late Utah Phillips, Garnet Rogers, Magpie, emma’s revolution, Jim Page and many more.
You can hear selections from the album, as well as cuts from George’s incisive new solo release, Into the Fire, at the “Farewell to the Thief” release concert. Sharing the bill with George are his partner Julius, Anne Feeney, Anne Hills, Chris Chandler and the DC Labor Chorus. I am going to try to be here and recommend that if you can get to Washington, you should be too! Let’s give the White House Squatter a good old labor/folk-music sendoff and sincere wishes that he and his co-conspirators will be tried for their crimes against humanity ASAP.
Here’s the basic info:
The concert will take place at 8 PM on Friday, Oct. 10, at the Communications Workers of America Headquarters in its ground-floor Conference Center – 501 3rd St. NW. The suggested admission price is $12, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds.
And be sure to listen to GDPR, where we’re featuring both the compilation LP and the new George Mann solo CD regularly. To get your own copies, click here.

As we remember the 40th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the progressive-peace grassroots voice of Baltimore and Nottington Village will feature the wisdom of the peace and justice icon throughout the day. And at 7 pm EDT, as part of Progressive Friday, Grateful Dread Public Radio will air a special hour-long tribute including excerpts from King speeches, diverse music honoring Dr. King, and an MLK-focused episode of Maria Gilardin’s TUC Radio. Now, you knew this was coming, so please keep reading: The SPRING MEMBERSHIP DRIVE is now under way. We survived a harrowing winter only barely, and we’ll get through spring and into summer and fall only with your support. If we cannot find significant financial support, we cannot keep this effort going. Plain. Simple. True.
We need a few large donations, or some small ones that repeat every month. Our basic membership is just $5 per month. That’s not a lot. And admit it, you spend more to subscribe to some pretty lame mainstream newspapers and magazines and to watch/hear mainstream TV and radio. You support activist groups that buy pricey ads in the New York Times, thus funding one of the greatest forces opposing what the same groups try to accomplish.
Support GDPR-NVPR by becoming a member or sponsor. This public radio and community service effort is all about peace, freedom, informing the people, and celebrating the arts. It presents real education and new insights into issues affecting each of us every day and gives voice to the grassroots the mainstream media diminish or ignore. It encourages and inspires people to work for positive change and a better world. Can you imagine the good we do every day we broadcast? Why not be part of it and put a little – whatever you can afford – into something that does good and that you can feel good about? Grateful Dread Public Radio is that something. Join us.
If you can help with a contribution or by becoming a Supporting Member, please do – we need you. Send us an email or phone us at (800) 519-4610 to get all the details or donate directly with Paypal or a credit card. As we are not government-certified yet (we are in the midst of this long, expensive process), contributions are not tax-deductible at this time. Also, if you would like to get involved with the station by volunteering your efforts or donating equipment, office furnitiure/supplies or anything, please write or call us.
