We Have a Bishop

The Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of New Hampshire This just in from Reuters:

The Reverend Canon V Gene Robinson was consecrated as the first openly gay bishop of the US Episcopal Church, a move that threatens to tear apart the worldwide Anglican community.

The Most Reverend Frank Griswold, presiding bishop of the US Episcopal Church, consecrated Robinson as bishop during a ceremony before several thousand people in an ice hockey arena at the University of New Hampshire.

Earlier, in a sanctioned protest that was part of the ceremony, several worshipers formally voiced their objection to installing an openly gay man as bishop and then walked out of the ceremony.

Robinson, a 56-year-old divorced father of two who has lived with his male partner for 13 years, has pleaded for unity, but conservatives say that his consecration will split the 70-million-member Anglican Communion.

“These are the days of miracles and wonder,” indeed!

Congratulations to Anglicans of justice, good will, and love, and of course to Bishop Robinson, his partner Mark Andrew, and his proud children and ex-wife. I pray that those in pain will think carefully before making any rash decisions.

More later.
